Printweek UK have been challenging graphic design students at the University of Brighton. Running an annual competition, their current task includes pushing the boundaries between print and digital media, and should prove to be an interesting project as it combines the oldest technologies with the new.

The entries presented intriguing and educational ideas but there could only be one winner, Charlotte Bassetts. Charlotte perfectly met the brief, proving how, together, print and digital media are more powerful than they are individually. Her design, which utilised Letterpress and Photoshop, will be featured as this year's cover of Power of Print. Charlotte cleverly submerged the quote, “these contrasting technologies are bound together through a well balanced relationship between organic and electronic.” within the finished piece.

The adaptability of the younger generation promises bright things are to come in the future of mixed media. Work like Charlotte’s shows print technology is growing alongside digital, not against, combining them only creating stronger opportunities. To quote Charlotte herself, “It is a design that would not have been possible without both the digital and the print elements of its composition, and its success is determined by that mix of technologies.”

The full story, from University of Brighton online, has some interesting insights from shortlisted students and how Charlotte created her masterpiece. It is a really fascinating article, showing that the younger generation leads the way in mixing media to such success. Although it only suggests a glimpse of what is to come for the office imaging industry, Premier is backing them all the way.
